Peter Bedford Housing Association: Victory for Unite members

Hackney housing strike off as Unite celebrates victory in pay dispute

Planned strike action at Peter Bedford Housing Association, in Hackney, involving members of Unite has been called off after management agreed to honour the pay deal they had previously failed to implement.

Twenty five Unite members were due to strike at the housing association, which provides care and assistance to 400 vulnerable adults in supported living accommodation, from Monday 3 December until Friday 7 December, after management reneged on an agreement to honour future local government pay incremental increases.

Management’s failure to honour the increases resulted in Unite members overwhelmingly voting for strike action.

Backdated pay increase

However once the strike action was announced and publicised, the management at Peter Bedford realised the error of their ways and agreed to implement the pay increases which will be backdated to April.

Unite regional officer Adam Lambert said: “Unite members are delighted that the management at Peter Bedford have come to their senses and agreed to pay the increase that workers were promised.

Solidarity vital

“The fact that Unite members were entirely united in solidarity throughout this dispute was vital in forcing management’s hand.

“Hopefully now that Peter Bedford’s management has honoured this years’ pay increase there will be no future problems and we can enjoy harmonious industrial relations in the future.

“Unite will be using the successful formula we have used at Peter Bedford at other housing associations where there are ongoing industrial issues.”
