Organising a Flying Start at Notting Hill Genesis
A group of Notting Hill Genesis (NHG) activists got off to a flying start with their first detailed strategy meeting on Tuesday 3rd September. The group covered a lot of ground and showed that they have the makings of a great team.
The post-merger restructuring consultation has come to an end but that in no way means that the issues that were raised are no longer relevant. Having disregarded staff concerns, management will now move to implement the measures outlined. Unite's priority task is to channel the anger that has been generated and become a democratic voice for members.
The advantage of the consultation period was that it gave us the opportunity to raise our profile and develop a set of demands. This has clearly put us on the map and even though NHG's HR refuse to speak with us directly, the fact that we have been name-checked and labeled 'agitators' clearly demonstrates that we have had a significant impact. We now need to build on that and give members the confidence to challenge proposed detriments.
Strategy Mapped Out
The activists mapped out several different tactics as part of a wider strategy aimed at informing members of the impact of changes, recruiting new members and reps, building pressure on management to reverse anything that has a negative impact on staff and tenants, and open a dialogue with the Executive. 
Priority Concerns and Next Steps
The exact details of the strategy will be relayed to members via the activists and at the next member meeting, but they involve activity in the workplace, working jointly with tenant groups, and using Unite's political power and connections to highlight the problems that will be caused if the measures are implemented. These include:
  • Serious concerns over the health, safety and well-being of stafff once the Anti-Social Behaviour teams are disbanded and their duties shifted onto the equivalent of neighbourhood officers without due safeguards.
  • Data protection issues relating to the apparent removal of checks to ensure that data on tenants is not disclosed inappropriately to third parties.
  • Significant loss of pay due to a downward harmonisation of roles.
