Show Racism the red card partnership with Unite

Wear red day

The UK’s leading anti-racism education charity, Show Racism the Red Card (SRtRC), will tomorrow (Thursday 24 September) launch its new partnership with Unite the Union in support of the charity’s biggest annual campaign – Wear Red Day.

The charity’s sixth annual Wear Read Day campaign takes place on Friday 16 October and aims to unite the country in taking positive action against racism, by inviting schools, businesses and individuals to donate £1 to wear red for the day, to help fund anti-racism education for young people and adults.

It's hoped that Thursday's launch of the new partnership between SRtRC and Unite, at 2pm via Zoom, will produce the biggest impact yet.

Speakers will include Shaka Hislop and Leroy Rosenior MBE - President and Vice President of SRtRC respectively - and Unite general secretary Len McCluskey. Discussion will centre around their own experiences and what Wear Red Day means to them.

Confirmed attendees also include ex-players and managers from 20 Premier League football clubs and Women’s Super League football clubs, such as former Liverpool and England legend John Barnes MBE; former Newcastle United and Brighton & Hove Albion manager Chris Hughton; and former Arsenal Ladies and England international Rachel Yankey.

Solidarity

Building on a year that has seen global solidarity for anti-racism, over 200 schools and businesses have already signed up to stand in support of the campaign. And now more than ever, SRtRC is in prime position to help implement meaningful change, as it delivers educational programmes to approximately 50,000 young people and 6,000 adults every year to ensure that Britain is a safer, more tolerant place in which to grow up and live.

Ged Grebby, SRtRC Chief Executive, said: “Our vision is of a world where lives are no longer ruined by racism. Having the support of Unite the Union is invaluable in helping spread the message to all sectors of society to stand up against racism and discrimination in all contexts of daily life. Wear Red Day is a prime opportunity for organisations to come together and demonstrate their commitment to a better future.”

Stand together

Len McCluskey said: "Show Racism the Red Card is my favourite charity and Unite is always hugely proud to work with SRtRC and to back Wear Red Day.  This year has reminded us all how important it is to stand together to challenge prejudice and division but also that we can never rest when it comes to eliminating the evil of racism.

"Our football community is so important to winning this fight.  Our terraces may not be alive with our voices but the support and solidarity of true football fans remains at the heart of winning the better world we all seek."
