Worker dies following accident at Clarion site

Gentle giant

 

A construction worker has died after an accident at a development site owned by the UK’s largest housing association, Clarion. Unite sends condolences to his friends, colleagues and loved ones.

 

Emergency services were called to Wiltshire Crescent, off Old Kempshott Lane, on Monday (February 15) following reports of an incident.  The employee, 30-year-old Scott Grimes, from Aldershot was taken to hospital but sadly died a short time later.

 

The Liverpool football fan and dad of one has been described by loved ones as a ‘gentle giant’ with a ‘heart of gold’ according to the local Gazette.

 

Health and safety

 

A fundraising appeal has been launched and has gone over the £20,000 target. See here for appeal.

 

Scott Grimes

 

A spokesperson for the HSE said: “We are currently looking into this incident with Hampshire Police who are leading on the investigation.

 

“A HSE (Health and Safety Executive) inspector has attended the site and has been working with them to ensure any ongoing risk is controlled.”

 

Deeply saddened

 

A spokesperson for Clarion said: “We are deeply saddened by the death of a man employed by a contractor on the Wiltshire Crescent site, and our thoughts are with his family, friends and colleagues.”

 

A spokesman for Brymor Construction said who were responsible for this site: “Regrettably an incident occurred, at our Wiltshire Crescent site, where an operative was found unresponsive.

 

“Sadly despite first aid being administered by our team and the emergency health professionals, they were unable to resuscitate him.

 

“The matter is being investigated by the relevant authorities and the Company continues to assist them with their inquiries. 

 

“The thoughts of everyone at Brymor remain with his family and friends at this time.”

 

Unite has supported a call by over two hundred operatives for Clarion to cease non-essential repairs during while Covid risk is raised. For details see here.
