St Mungos Broadway Urgent Strike Fund Appeal

St Mungos Broadway Strike Appeal

Unite members at St Mungos Broadway (from the Unite Housing Workers Branch) will be taking seven days of strike action in defence of their housing association, staff terms and conditions, and union rights, all of which have come under a sudden and vicious attack following a merger. Over 95% of respondents voted to take strike action on a turnout of almost 70%.

St Mungos Broadway was formed by merger in April 2014. The Mungos CEO and many of the senior management were soon replaced by those from the smaller Broadway. Despite the hard work and commitment of the workers at Broadway, the executive had proved themselves incapable of managing the organisation's finances effectively, and the charity made a loss. On taking up their posts in the merged St Mungos Broadway, they immediately instigated sweeping changes for the worse to the terms and conditions, pay, and union rights of staff at the homelessness charity. It is an unprecedented, provocative, and reckless attack which members have described as 'ripping the heart out of a well-loved and high-performing St Mungos'. The changes have been implemented without consultation.

Unite members from both the Mungos and TUPE'd Broadway organisations fear for the quality of their services to highly vulnerable members of the community. They fear for the well-deserved reputation of St Mungos Broadway as a quality services provider and financially thriving charity. They also fear for their own ability to stay in work as the salaries of frontline workers are slashed and other benefits removed, pitching them in a race to the bottom. The transferred Broadway staff have had to endure a bullying management for years, and have see their work repeatedly undermined by senior management. Now, by joining with the Mungos members, they are able to put a stop to it.

There are around 600 Unite members at St Mungos Broadway and we urgently need your support to help with hardship payments during this strike action.
